    Trouble Repaying

Communicating with your lender/the federal loan servicer is the best policy. When it is time for repayment to begin, if you have extenuating circumstances or know you will not be able to meet your payment schedule or amount, contact the lender/federal loan servicer at once. Under certain conditions you may be eligible for a "forbearance" period; or, if you meet certain conditions, deferment may be possible. See the Loan deferment, cancellation, and forbearance charts that follow. Conditions listed are subject to change; check with the federal loan servicer about eligibility conditions at the time you need the deferment.
